what is the first thing mayer plays? i can't seem to figure out how to get that noise on my axe. what is it called? i've heard les paul do it too, and i really want to learn how to do it.

Sounds like he has some echo on there. The treble is down a bit and there's quite a bit of tone there. I especially listened to the first part. I'm not sure what your referring to. It's just a blues riff from what I hear. are you talking about the part where his fingers are sliding up the fretboard, giving it sort of a whistle sound?

Like Fred K. said, you slide your fingers up the fret board. Try putting your finger on the first string, 5th fret, and slide it up to around the 12 fret or until it gets to the desired pitch. JM is doing that, it's just a quick little gesture.

You can get a slide if you still can't find that right sound, but otherwise, it should work without one, or even just with a pick, though the metal picks would be best for that.
