You don't have to be a gigging musician to enjoy the guitar, but for people that choose to perform, what do you use to get your best tone? I had a pedal board from the netherworlds but after frustrating nights of signal canceling out and too much 60 cycle hum, I reduced my live rig to a Twin, a tele, and a DD-2 coupled with a Danelectro Cool Cat in the effect loop. Punchy, great gain, and many happy fans cheering on the 'brown' sound.

Tuner -> Morley Bad Horsie 2 Wah -> Compressor -> Marshall

Simple. I used to be an effects fiend, but you can so easily get too caught up in all that. Less is sometimes more.

I really am digging my ravelle. It's a beautiful guitar with fat tone and a fast neck. I got one of the limited edition ones at a steal of a price. There were only 37 of each color made (yellow, blue, green) and I've privileged to have one.

I don't do live, but my tone is fairly simple anyway. Guitar into an amp I can work with. Possibly with the insertion of a tubescreamer, just because...

I've never actually owned a Tubescreamer myself but the reproduction version in my POD XT live (i think it's based on the TS-808) sounds pretty good, and comes in handy when I need just that slight bit of drive instead of raging over-the-top metal grind. I might just have to pick one up just to mess around with.

I like my XT live for the convienience factor, but I still like to experiment with real stuff just to get a feel for it. After all, how am I supposed really know what the models are supposed to sound like if I've never heard the real thing?

I agree that less is more sometimes, but I think lot of effects can sound awesome in the right style of music and played the correct way. I try to use my effects to make my guitar sound less like a guitar and more like a...moving car or something. I\'ve always enjoyed, what I call \"ear candy\" in songs - little memorable sounds that keep your attention. Anyways, at the moment, this is the setup...

Fender Custom Shop Strat > DD-20 Twin Delay > Ibanez Tubescreamer > RT-20 Rotary Processor > Analog Man Bi-Comprossor > Analog Man Fuzzface > Real McCoy RMC Custom Wah

I also have a PS-5 Super Shifter that I like to throw in there sometimes. You can get some really cool noises out of that if you\'re not thinking of it as a harmonizer or pitch shifter. That in combo with delays = weird shit, haha.

My rig is old school. Guitar > a few pedals > amp. I prefer to use a 100 watt Marshall head with a Hot Plate and a 4x12 slant cab because my amp is my monitor on stage. I'm also guilty of placing my half-stack on top of another 4x12 so I can hear it better. I sometimes get crap from people who think I'm using a full-stack in a club.

I use two signal paths, one direct and one through the loop.

Direct:

Guitar > Morley Bad Horsie Wah > Ibanez TS-808 reissue Tube Screamer > Digitech Whammy IV > Marshall DSL 100

Effects Loop:

Boss TU-2 Tuner > MXR EVH Phase 90 > Digitech Multi-Chorus > Boss TR-2 Tremolo > Ibanez AD9 reissue Analog Delay

I use the "mid-scoop" voicing on the DSL 100 but not the "Ultra Gain" voicing. Instead, I crank the volume and let the Hot Plate do its magic. I have the Tube Screamer set to a clean boost for solos and to add chunk on heavier songs.

How can you call your rig old school? that's 7 effects and in and around your amp.
For years i was a straight up Guitar into my amp, If I couldn't get a particular sound, with my hands then it wasn't going to happen, then again i've always been a guitar to amp that's on full distortion, and the song is at full swing 100% of the time, so not much down time to get into clean tones with chrous' delays on them.

I did recently add into my line up a tc electronics g major, just for lead application. I suppose if i didn't have that one rack item, and still used the effects for it. I'd have a compressor and delay and reverb pedal to go along with my rig.

Guitar -> Jimi Dunlop Wah -> Flextone III XL(with shortboard)

The only reason the wah is there is because the expression pedal on the shorboard doubles as a volume pedal, and doesnt work well going back and forth. This gives me pretty much all the effects I need, with a tuner to boot.

Yeah I've got the same deal on my XT live. So when do the Cover Band thing, I got the extra expression pedal. But when I do the metal thing, I just use my Morley wah.

I keep it real simple and use about 4 different setups from time to time.

guitar --> Boss GT-6 ---> direct to PA

guitar --> Marshall half stack

guitar --> Boss GT-6 (for effects) --> Marshall half stack

acoustic --> acoustic amp

Gibson SG, Peavey Classic 50, Cry Baby and a DidiTech RP50 for some chorus and delay on a few songs but mostly just the amp alone.

I don't think I've got too much pedals, just the basic ones to produce the tone I love. Here is the setup I use live and at band practice.

Guitar -> MXR Distortion II -> '71 Dunlop Crybaby -> Boss NS-2 -> Alesis Nanoverb -> Ibanez DE-7 -> Marshall half stack
