I have an opportunity to buy a 1954 LP Junior. All original. Has a concussion-type blemish on one edge of the body - as though it was dropped. What would be a fair offer for this guitar?

Not exactly familiar with the LP Jr., but I would say to check Kelly's Blue book and see what they might have them valued at. Of course a blem is going to knock off dollars and depending on how rare it is, will depend on how much would be taken off. I would also maybe check ebay to see if there are any on there also and see what they are selling for, if there are any on there.

Good luck!

Anyone have a more definite idea of what this guitar should bring?

The store that has this guitar for sale has priced it at $4200.

(Looks like somebody didn't like my previous post - which was a question. Wierd)

Okay.. I'm gonna help you out here but.. With a couple of caveats.

First.. when dealing in Vintage guitars, IF you don't know what you're doing then DON'T. You can get "suckered" VERY quickly.

Second.. What LP Junior is it? Standard or 3/4 scale (again.. If you didn't know this you're in trouble already).

Third. Is it straight and ALL original? (I'm NOT talking about what the dealer says, I'm talking about what you know or can find out) Original finish? pickups? tuners? wiring? etc...

Fourth.. How do you know it is a 54? Have you chased down the serial number?

Fifth.. for real 1954 "Standard" Juniors that are straight all original and no issues they sell anywhere between 6k and 12k depending on condition. For 4K out the door either the seller has NO clue (not likey) or there are things you don't know about the guitar.

Good Luck.

All I really know about vintage guitars is that the ones I grew up playing are now collectors' item selling for many thousands of dollars apiece. I don't know whether this particular one is all original, but I imagine the owner of the store does. I've known him longer than he's owned the store. We met when he was a luthier. I was one of his first customers. He doesn't need the money bad enough to lie to me about this guitar.

I do know that it is a Standard size. And it does have the "concussion" damage I mentioned. I checked the price tag today: $4299.

I probably won't buy it - because it isn't worth that much to me. I do like it. It's the kind of neck I grew up on, and it feels natural to me. But I'm leaning toward going solo with an acoustic. Guys my age don't wear bands very well, and Neil Young is the only person on Earth who could pull off an electric guitar solo act. My pocketbook is getting pretty thin, too. In the last six weeks I've bought a Martin SWOMGT, a Larrivee SD-50, and a Taylor 454CE 12-string - not to mention a Beta 58A, an L.R Baggs M1, and various other ancillaries. There's a little Players' Pub here in town, and I'm fixin' to go in there and show 'em what it's all about.

Prices for "vintage" have been staggering the last few years. Glad I got mine when they were just "used" :-) When I bought my LP they were almost paying you to take them. :-)

Juniors are nice pieces but, it's all in what you need/want.

Good Luck with the acoustic gig. Sounds like a good time will be had by all.
