One of the greatest. A true genius. He far outstrips Clapton or Page.

Watered Down?? Blues? SRV, could take a 16 bar "E" Break, and stetch it out to 36, and  youd swear he could never get back to the Core chord, and then with eyes closed, he,d be right back where he should be, If thats "Watered Down", then Clapton, and Hendrix, were "Soaked to the Skin"

I have to agree with Lawrence. I am sure you can call SRV the greatest of all times, but calling him watered down is like calling Mozart a watered down classical composer. Stevie is certainly among the greatest and all you have to do is listen to his stuff to know that, but what about Clapton? He was most influential in so many ways in the blues and heavy metal genres. And who could dispute the impact Hendrix had on electric blues and music in general. BUT, before we give any of these guys their credit, let's not forget Robert Johnson, who started years before any of them were born. I can only be grateful I live in a time when I can listen to any and all of them at my leisure.

I was watching a similar thread on another forum a few weeks ago.  In my opinion, SRV was a superb guitar player.  Technically he was not the greatest but like Jimi Henrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, B.B. King and many others he opened new ground.  He brought the Blues back from a slow lingering death.  He also inspired a new generation of players to try to play the guitar.  He was along with the others mentioned above instantly recognizable.  From the first note you know that is SRV,Jimi, Zep, etc.  That in my opinion is the measure of Greatness.
