gary is without question one of my all time favs. he was/is a great ryhytm guitarist and also was responsible for some very impressive lead work. he was never known for super speed or the most technical stuff but still he had a style that has always sounded so sweet to me. he would get my vote as one of the most natural sounding players of all time.

Gary Rossington is the benchmark of the southern rock sound. Like I said in the topic "major pentatonic scale" He picked up where Duane Allman left off. Dickey Betts did a great job but his was a little too country. Gary Rossington made it sound more like rock and with a much better feel. Listen to "I Aint the One", " Dont ask me No Questions" and "Whats Your Name". These are great riffs and they dont get much recognition because the new shreaders think that Soutern Rock is lame. He is my second favorite guitar player.

" i aint the one " contains one of my favorite lead riffs of all time. gary and allen were both great on that one.

you are right about most youngsters thinking southern rock is lame. what a damn shame man!!! im only 28 so i guess im a youngster myself but sometimes i feel like i should have been born about 25 years earlier. skynyrd, ccr, molly hatchet, allman bros, zz top, ect. sounds so much better than most of the stuff that is current.

I never looked at your profile and I assumed you were a lot older. It is good to see a person your age that has a good taste in music and can not only appreciate the music but also who plays it and where it comes from. I was very fortunate in the fact that I had 2 older brothers that were 8 and 10 years older than me. In 1974 I was 10 years old. When I went to school the other kids were talking about The Osmonds and the Jackson Five. I was talking about Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers Eat a Peach, Derrick and the Dominos and Lynyrd Skynyrd's Second Helping. I owe my brothers for for so much of my musical development. And if you did not know, my dad was a bluegrass mandolin player. He loved Skynyrd's Mississippi Kid. He was pretty cool.He said that if he had to choose a rock band (and he was not onto rock music) he would choose ZZ Top.
