In my opinion the use if the major pentatonic scale is what sepparated siuthern rock from more traditional rock in the seventies. It was mainly used in counrty and blues but Duane Allman started to rock it a little bit and Gary Rossington took it to the next level with I Aint the One and Gimme 3 Steps,
