Great songwriter and violinist. He's always a great listen for lyrical content and production ideas.
This is a vocal album that needs too be cranked when heard. Whitacre is all about the layering of harmony, or rather the layering of dissonance. I'm recommending the CD, but if you ever see or hear anything about a choir performing one of his pieces, that is a must experience. It doesn't matter if it's not your thing and all you listen to is straight pop. Live, anyone can appreciate this music.
This is probably the most timeless record ever created. No folk record has come close to the originality of chordal voicing, melody lines, lyrical content, or instrumental production as Five Leaves Left. Its such a pure album without dabbling in kitsch, culture fascination, sex appeal, and other such none-sense that clutters much of the music industry today. It is music that creates a mood that is saddening, yet empathetic and consoling. The quality that Nick shows in his songwriting and guitar playing is reflected perfectly by Robert Kirby's accompanying string arrangements and interpretation of mood.
A new breed and style for indie. A different texture and huge use of part layering.
