My music recommendations
In Flames has been around for over a decade already and their style has changed drastically since the beginning. They started out straight up melodic death, ventured into, dare I say it, almost metalcore, then God knows what. Come Clarity is their best release since 2000s [i[Clayman. Don't get me wrong, the production on the past couple albums has been phenomenal. Very tight, great mixing, and some keys/synth in the background for extra atmosphere. Unfortunately, their actual music was very lacking. With Come Clarity, In Flames has managed to fuse their playing and music from earlier releases with the production and mastering of their later releases and I gotta say, I love it. My personal favorite songs off this album, the title track, "Come Clarity", "Vacuum", and "Vanishing Light". Note: there are 2 copies that are available across the US, standard and limited edition. The only difference is the limited edition comes with a DVD of the band performing the album in the studio (sans the last track) with the album recordings dubbed over. For the extra one cent at Amazon.com, there is no reason to not pick up the limited edition.
Debut album from this innovation progressive metal band. Heavily influenced by progressive rock pioneers such as Rush and King Crimson, Pain of Salvation brings it together with all the heaviness you can expect from modern metal. Favorite track on the album, "People Passing By"
If you've never heard of Rob Dougan, chances are, you've probably heard one of his pieces in movies (most notably The Matrix series). His music can best be described as Orchestral Trip-Hop. Though more known for his instrumental pieces, this album is full of superb vocal tracks. Many people are turned off by his gritty voice, but I think it fits with the music as well as the lyrical content. The songs all deal with love, loss, and life and tend to have a dark feeling to them. The music is powerful, overwhelming, occasionally calming, and hypnotic at times. When artists claim to be like nothing else, they lie. This is the real, different, deal. The use of a full 80 piece orchestra to record the album gives it a full sound that is really indescribable. Personal favorites are "Will You Follow Me?", "There's Only Me", "Nothing At All" and "Drinking Song" (the interlude reminds me a lot of Debussy's early work) all from the first disc. The second disc contains variations of the some of the instrumental tracks and the tracks with vocals, without... the vocals. Definitely one of my top 3 favorite albums of all time.
I have not heard anything to this day, heavier than this band. This is the first album I heard by TPH, and holy crap. Brutal. TPH is proof that a single band nazi leading the pack will create great music, there is no doubt about it. I really can't compare this album to anything I've heard before. Each track averages about 8 minutes in length, but you don't really notice it. Around every corner is a new set of riffs to blow you away. Taking the male death growls is Jörgen Sandström (Entombed, Grave) and I gotta say, probably the best growls in metal. Along side him is Ms. Jo who joined the band in 2003 and holds her own in the stereo slaughter. Personal favorite tracks, "Nailed" and "Weep". Amazon doesn't have any clips to check out the greatness of this band, but head on over to GlobalDomination.se (on the left side, a little ways down) and you can check out a song from the bands 2006 release, "Armageddon March Eternal". In this modern world of piracy, these are one of the few bands that are worth every cent supporting.
