Two books about Frank Zappa will be released later this year. Zappa Gear will detail the equipment used by the musician, while The Hot Rats Book will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Zappa’s album Hot Rats.

Zappa Gear will be released on 29 November, and is written by Mike Ekers, with a foreword by Dweezil Zappa. The book contains over 180 detailed photographs of the instruments and equipment Zappa used over his career. Zappa was known for his relentless experimentation, not just with how he wrote and improvised his music – but also with how equipment could be used. Zappa Gear will also highlight the development of music technology around the 1960s, a time which saw a great number of innovations – leading to a lot of the gear Zappa made extensive use of.

The Hot Rats Book, by Bill Gubbins and Ahmet Zappa, will be released on 15 December. The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Hot Rats LP, and will contain newly-published photographs from Gubbins’ documentation of the Hot Rats sessions, along with interviews. Hot Rats, released in 1969, would be one of Zappa’s best-received albums, and showcasing Zappa’s signature virtuosity.
