‘Aight… So you’re looking at this and wondering what the hell it means…. First off the diagrams aren’t “tabs” they are ASCII Fretboard Diagrams. So each |---| is one fret. Then those numbers mean what finger you should place on that fret (1= index, 2 = middle, 3 = ring, 4 = pinky).

The “position #” means what note is the root note of that mode (i.e. for the first one it says “Ionian Position = #1” that means the first note is the root note, and it says “Dorian Position = #7” that means the seventh note you play is the root note).

Now for an explanation of the 7 Modes
*Some usefull background info:*
Major Scale Formula: Tone Tone Semitone Tone Tone Tone Semitone
Minor Scale Formula: Tone Semitone Tone Tone Semitone Tone Tone

Ionian:
Also known as the Natural Major Scale, it is happy. I use Ionian when I play "punk" songs like The Vandals stuff. The notes in C Ionian would be the notes : C D E F G A B C.

Dorian:
Is a minor type of scale with a "Raised"(#) 6th note. Its commonly used in blues. The notes in D Dorian would be: D E F G A B C D

Phrygian:
Is also a minor type scale, but with a "Lowered"(b)2nd note. I am pretty sure that Steve Vai type players use this alot. The notes in E Phrygian would be: E F G A B C D E

Lydian:
Is a major type scale with a "Raised"(#) 4th note. Again I think Steve Vai type guys would like this one. The notes in F Lydian are: F G A B C D E F

Mixolydian:
Is a major type scale with a "Lowered"(b) 7th note. You can use this scale to make hella sweet chord voicings. G Mixolydian is: G A B C D E F G

Aeolian:
A.K.A. the Minor scale. Sounds sad and is what I use when I want to shred... A Aeolian is: A B C D E F G A

Locrian:
Is a minor scale with a "Lowered"(b) 2nd and 5th. Locrian can be used to create "Tension" and a state of "Fear!". B Locrian is: B C D E F G A B
