Learn to play guitar - take II

So I started learning to play about 20 years ago. I bought a cheap guitar (Marlin) and a cheap practice amp (Ross Fame Series) and started making some noise. I even got keen and started having a weekly lesson but that soon turned into an excuse to drink and smoke and listen to music so wasn't very successful ...
Any ways, I thrashed about for a couple of years, learning chords, scales and a few songs but never really took it seriously. I did do one smart thing which was to buy a Yamaha FZ-1000 which I still have. So I've done the getting my hair cut, getting a job, getting a family and now I figure it's time to start playing again.
Last time around there was no Interweb, but I recently started looking about on the web for useful resources (which is how I found this site). There is a useful site I found;
(http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/)
It has some useful lessons on there, and there was one long post in response to a lesson on music theory that got me thinking; maybe if I learned the language of music I would find it easier to learn and I would understand what I was learning. So this time I figure I will learn a bit of theory, work through a couple of books I have on rock / metal techniques and use on-line resources (tabs). I don't know if I will go with lessons this time around ...
I bought a new guitar, PRS SE Soapbar, which seems to be OK for practicing. I have been at it for a week or so and it is coming back slowly. I have also started reading up on theory and it is helping to make sense of some things. I must be making progress 'cause my fingertips hurt all the time (that could be old age).
So I figure I will blog my learning experiences and see how far I get ...
