For the Beginners

This is for all the new guitar players on the site. I have a few tidbits of advice for you guys that I hope will help. First of all, play what you want to play, not what everyone else wants you too. When I first started everyone played the pop music like Bowling for Soup and other such groups. Through it all though I stuck to my classic rock, and as my class mates interest waned, mine increased. Playing what you want gives you a sense of accomplishment, while playing what someone else wants turns it into work. In a band you cannot always play what you want to, make sure the group fits your musical interests, so that you can make legititmate suggestions to the set list. The second piece of advise I have, is to jam. Play with people even though you play two different kinds of music. For example, I jammed with the pop guys, I learned the importance of catchy lyrics. I jammed with the metal heads, I picked up a lot speed. I played with the blues guys, and I picked up a lot of feeling. These are two pieces of advise that I have for beginners.
