The Pentatonic Scale

The video on this page is played on the A minor pentatonic scale. This scale can be used for playing blues, rock riffs and composing solos.

The A minor pentatonic scale (two octaves)

E----------------------------------------------5---8
B----------------------------------------5---8------
G-------------------------------5---7---------------
D----------------------5---7-----------------------
A-------------5---7 -------------------------------

E ----5---8----------------------------------------

You can also make this scale sound 'bluesy' by adding a chromatic note after the third not on the scale (D).
E--------------------------------------------------------5---8
B-----------------------------------------------5---8------
G-----------------------------------5---7---8------------
D--------------------------5---7--------------------------
A-------------5---6---7-----------------------------------
E ----5---8-----------------------------------------------

On this scale, bends on the 'G' and 'B' string sound great, and sliding adds a cool dramatic effect to what you play.
This scale can be blended into the harmonic minor scale.
Muting also works well with the bass D, A and E strings.
Thois video is an example of a rock piece that can be played on this scale.
