Texas Shuffle Lesson Part 6
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble’s second studio recording Couldn’t Stand the Weather was a turning point in their career. With the title track in MTV rotation and a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” that opened radio’s ears to Vaughan’s unmitigated talent, the 1984 LP propelled the band up from clubs to arenas and made them stars. But Vaughan, Shannon and drummer Chris Layton refused to abandon their blues roots to achieve success. The album’s “Tin Pan Alley” is one of the finest slow blues performances ever set to tape, an incredibly dramatic essay in the power of pure tone and dynamic control. And “The Things (That) I Used to Do” captures the sticky-fingered grace of Guitar Slim’s original. Then there’s the swinging finger-buster shuffle “Scuttle Buttin’” and “Stang’s Swang,” where Vaughan can be heard playing an archtop Gibson Johnny Smith model.mulberry clutch handbags
