Not Enough Time In The Day!

So we're supposed to "blog" something.  I don't even know what "blog" means!  Seeing as I also despise computers, the internet and all other "intrusions" into my life, I have to wonder why I'm even writing this in the first place!

Here goes...

I only post here during work hours.  I'm at a comp and since it's available, and g.com has been the ONLY place I can post on the net, (thank God,) I'll continue to do so as long as it's easy.  There's just too much to do in a day and not enough hours to accomplish it all.  I don't watch television, except during footbal season, so that's one thing I've managed to eliminate to free up some time.  It's also the reason I don't post when I get home.  Hell, I don't even check the email!  That's the wife's job.  It's her computer, after all, so I don't hardly ever touch it.  Only when I'm forced to.  Like this weekend when I'll be doing taxes online.  So there's another piece that saves me time.  Also don't play video games and don't really have an interest in them at all.

My time is spent in the studio out back.  I'm either working on someones project.  Running new cable.  Repatching gear.  Or playing.  It was a choice to either not engage in a hobby that has cost me over $100,000, or eliminate all the other crap so I had the time to do what I want to do.  Which is play in the studio!

I'll still be posting in recording mostly as there's no reason to keep secret all the cool things we figure out in the studio.  Like most recording, I can give you a starting point and some ideas for developing tracks, but recording is just an experiment that has few set rules because everything you do will be different, console to console, instrument to instrument, amp to amp, cab to cab.  Every different combination will require a different solution.  Unless you're recording direct, even your electric recordings are based in acoustic sound.  Being an acoustic engineer gives me a little edge here.  At least I was finally able to use my education when I built my studio.  Funny thing about that is that I'm still learning the space because everything you put into the room changes how it sounds.  I designed it empty, as is usual, so if I empty the room I know exactly what I'll get.  Add a drum kit, keyboard to the keys corner, guitars, amps, cabs, etc., and it all changes.  Personally, I enjoy the challenge of finding the right place for the cab and mic.  (Drums have a special corner designed just for them so micing a kit is a breeze and always sounds great.)

If you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to put a post in recording.  If I'm not dead, I'll answer.

You may also notice that I have no Gear Recommendations.  This is because, currently, we can only "recommend" gear from Musician's Friend.  I've never found them very friendly in the first place.  Not that they haven't been given a chance, (I've spent about $10,000 there over the years,) but if I'm going to have a problem with an order, it's probably going to be Musician's Friend.  Aside from that, they sell low end gear that doesn't really meet the needs of a professional.  Some of it is OK, but there is VERY little they have that I would recommend.

I also don't have any music recommendations.  Mostly I'm listening to stuff in the studio, so it's not like you can go out and buy it in the first place.  Not yet anyway.

I am a little concerned about the "money making" part of the site.  I'm, personally, not interested.  This site has always been about sharing what we know and why we do things the way we do.  Driving toward something that pays you, I believe, will affect how many will respond to others questions and needs.  The site may be changing, but I don't have to!  If you have any questions for recommendations, etc., ask me directly and I'll tell you what I think.  I'm going to abide by the "if you don't ask, I won't tell," philosophy.

My gear recommendations:
