One album consisting of three songs. One was 18 minutes, one was 10 minutes, and one was 9 minutes. Had the progressive rock movement of the 60s and 70s become way too self-indulgent? That depends on if you've heard this album. Though the songs are rather long, the song "Close To The Edge" has a hold on you from start to finish, and is really just variations of the single chorus of the song in different styles. The song "And You And I" has been a staple of their live performaces, and is a catchy song. The breakout track for me was "Siberian Khatru" which has a steady beat the whole time, is the shortest of the bunch, and isn't too complex or confusing. There's something in there for everyone, but I'd suggest only buying this if you're a fan of Yes.
Along with Thin Lizzy's Live & Dangerous, this 1979 effort from Britain's UFO makes or heads every "Best Live Album" of the Rock era. Adult lyrics and vocals mesh with great song crafting to create the perfect backdrop for Michael Schenker's heroic guitar work. Short on flash and long on note selection and song relevance, Shencker was simply the best guitarist working the hard rock circuit in his prime. Unfortunately his prime burned as briefly as it did bright. Lights Out, Rock Bottom, This Kid's, Let it Roll, I'm a Loser, and Love to Love are classics every one. Ron Nevison does just enough work from the producer's desk to leave the tone right and vibe cooking. This is a "Desert Island 5" must have for all guitar fans.
